Cultural competency is a popular buzzword — but we prefer the term ‘Cultural Responsiveness’.
We believe that true cultural competence involves recognising that it’s impossible to be an expert on someone else’s culture, even when sharing a similar background. Culture, like identity, is dynamic and ever-evolving, and each person has a unique and personal relationship with the cultures they belong to.
Culturally responsive therapists adopt a therapeutic approach that acknowledges and values race, ethnicity, and cultural experiences as integral aspects of identity and mental health experiences. It provides therapeutic interventions that are respectful, mindful, and inclusive of these important factors.
